The Chacma Baboons of the Kruger National Park

Chacma baboons are numerous in the Kruger National Park and live in huge troops numbering up to 200 animals (typically between 30-40).  Troops consist of a family group of males, females and their young.  Young baboons depend on their mothers for transportation, initially the little “pink foots” cling to the underside of the mother.  At around 3 months of age they start riding “jockey style” on mommy’s back (leaning against the tail for support) as seen in this footage...

The African Giraffe

There are approximately 10000 Giraffes in the Kruger National Park.  They are gregarious and live in nonterritorial loose groups of up to 20 at a time, a behaviour that apparently allows for increased vigilance against predators. They have excellent eyesight, and when one giraffe notices approaching danger it will keep staring until the others look in that direction too.  Giraffes live up to 26 years in the wild and slightly longer in captivity.

COVID-19 SOUTH AFRICA AND THE KRUGER NATIONAL PARK

In an address to the nation on Thursday night (9 April), president Cyril Ramaphosa said while it is still too early to gauge the real effect of the lockdown on the spread of the coronavirus in South Africa, initial data shows that it is definitely having an impact.  President Ramaphosa first declared the coronavirus pandemic a national disaster on 15 March, and announced a 21-day nationwide lockdown a few days later on 23 March.  South Africa’s lockdown has since been extended by another two extra weeks until (at least) the end of April.

Amazing Kruger Leopard sighting

During a recent Group tour in the Kruger National Park we saw this leopard dragging her kill underneath the road through a water drainage pipe to come out on the other side.  She had to drag the kill a long way to get to a tree big enough, and she had to stop and rest frequently.  It was an incredible sighting !!

Kruger Day – 10 October

The Kruger National Park was first established by the then President of the Transvaal, Paul Kruger, in 1898 and his name has become synonymous with the South African wildlife experience.

The African Elephant

The African elephant is a genus comprising two living elephant species, the African bush elephant and the smaller African forest elephant. Both are herbivores and live in groups. They have grey skin and differ in the size of their ears and tusks, and in the shape and size of their skulls.

National Women's Day - 9 August

On 9 August 1956, 20,000 women staged a march to the Union Buildings in Pretoria to protest against proposed amendments to the act. They left petitions containing more than 100,000 signatures at prime minister J.G. Strijdom's office door. They stood silently outside his door for 30 minutes.
